How to Care for Cast Iron and Clay Chimenea

Cast Iron Chimeneas

One of the best things about cast iron chimeneas is the estimate of heat that can be given out, you can fire cast iron chimeneas to the maximum with no fear of cracking or breaking (although the close may damage). Cast chimeneas can be left out in all weathers and as the heat dissipates very swiftly through the metal will swiftly warm the patio all around the body.

Steam Iron

To keep your Chimenea looking great keep oily rags handy to wipe over your Chimenea when cool to help safe the Chimenea from excessive rusting. If the Chimenea is fire to high temperatures the heat resistant paint used to colour the Cast Iron Chimenea may burn off and can be repainted with any high climatic characteristic paint if you wish although most people like the old corollary of a well-used Chimenea!

Quick tips: Wipe over with an oily rag after use. Use any heat resistant paint to touch up. Lift by the base not the funnel.

Don't forget cast iron chimeneas get very hot in use and should not be touched for some time afterwards.

Clay Chimeneas
Clay chimeneas are generally classed as the best looking of all chimeneas and work in quite a dissimilar way to cast Iron. Within Clay chimeneas the heat builds and is gently released through the Chimenea walls which radiates slower than Cast Iron.

Clay chimeneas need more care than Cast Iron. Clay chimeneas need to be kept dry as wet chimeneas generate steam within the clay which cracks the clay when it expands. Make sure you use a waterproof cover for your Chimenea, but remember not to put it over until cooled! Clay chimeneas can be fired quite hot but if over fired then the Chimenea may crack and at lower temperatures the paint may burn off.

Quick tips: always use the cover. Do not over fire. Use sand in the bowl of the Chimenea. (The sand absorbs a bit of the heat protecting the clay). If you settle to Move your Chimenea, remember to take off the old sand first. If possible, store inside or in your shed over winter. When Lighting the Chimenea, always remember to build the fire slowly. Over time, your Chimenea will take on an aged look.
